Episode 45: 9 Postpartum Warning Signs You Can’t Ignore

Bringing a baby into the world is life-changing, but postpartum recovery is often overlooked when it comes to maternal health. Many new moms assume that discomfort, exhaustion, and certain symptoms are “just part of the process.” But did you know that some postpartum warning signs can indicate serious, even life-threatening conditions?

In our latest podcast episode, I sat down with Jessica Irrobali, Director of Collaborative Clinical Programs at AWHONN (Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses) to discuss the critical postpartum warning signs that every parent and support system should know.

🚨 Postpartum Health: What’s Normal vs. What’s Not
Many postpartum symptoms—like fatigue, mild swelling, and hormonal changes—are completely normal. But some changes should never be ignored. Here are some key takeaways from our discussion:

The Nine Key Postpartum Warning Signs
AWHONN has identified nine crucial postpartum warning signs that can signal serious complications. Ignoring them can lead to life-threatening emergencies. These include:

  • P - Pain in chest

  • O - Obstructed breathing or shortness of breath

  • S - Seizures

  • T - Thoughts of hurting yourself or someone else

  • B - Bleeding, soaking through one pad an hour, or large clots

  • I - Incision that isn’t healing

  • R - Red, swollen leg that’s painful or warm to touch

  • T - Temperature of 100.4°F+ or 96.8°F or lower (a possible sign of infection/sepsis)

  • H - Headache that doesn’t go away with medication or vision changes

If you or someone you know experiences any of these signs, seek medical help immediately.

The Dangers of Preeclampsia Postpartum
Most people think of preeclampsia as a pregnancy-related condition, but did you know it can appear after birth? Jessica explains how postpartum preeclampsia can cause dangerously high blood pressure and life-threatening complications even weeks after delivery.

Sepsis: A Hidden Postpartum Threat
Sepsis is a severe infection that can develop after childbirth and quickly become fatal if untreated. Symptoms include fever, chills, rapid heartbeat, and confusion. Many new moms mistake these for normal postpartum exhaustion—but knowing the difference could save a life.

The Overlooked Mental Health Crisis
Postpartum mental health challenges often go unnoticed or dismissed. If you or someone you know is struggling with severe anxiety, depression, or intrusive thoughts, help is available. You are not alone.

Why Postpartum Education Matters
Mothers shouldn’t have to suffer in silence or question whether what they’re feeling is “normal.” Education and awareness are powerful tools in preventing maternal health emergencies. That’s why organizations like AWHONN are working to equip families with life-saving knowledge.
